Space Cowboys.

Want to chase villains on the edge of the known frontier? Tired of horses, but still like your subtle cowboy style? Well, have I got a show for you. Cowboy Bebop, an anime series started in 1998, is filled with great music and fun humor. It’s really worth a browse. I prefer to watch all movies/series subtitled, not dubbed, but I’ve heard that this series has pretty good voice actors in English if subtitles are not your scene.

Still not convinced? Well, here’s a bit more about it. Cowboy Bebop follows the adventures of a bounty hunter ship manned by two fellows called Spike and Jet. They are soon joined by a few other crew members (a spicy woman, an adorably idiotic but genius kid, and a dog) to fill out their numbers and add to their charm. With amazing skill but horrible luck, this cast goes on adventure after adventure to beat bad guys and learn about themselves. The art style might be a bit dated, but not overly so. In fact, I think they did a great job with keeping the futuristic technology just detailed enough to be interesting, but vague enough to make it still plausible now, 15 years later. Combine that with killer, jazzy music as a backdrop, and you have a great show (the opening song is super fun!).

In many ways it reminds me a bit of Firefly, another great TV series. The same laissez-faire attitude seems to be at the heart of both the main characters, Spike Spiegel of Cowboy Bebop and Malcolm Reynolds of Firefly. They want to go their own way with no interference. Yet they both have an extreme sense of justice – they just might not let it show. And they are never one to leave a buddy hanging or pass up a good fight.

So, if you are in the mood to try something new, check it out! You may find yourself pleasantly surprised, even if you have never watched any anime before. Accessible, funny, and not full of specific, Japanese, cultural references, I think this might be a great introduction <3

P.S. I got the image from another blog that gives a review of the English dubbing. Check it out if you want to watch it in English.
